HR Generalist

We are looking for an HR Generalist to join our Atkinson Construction team.  This is an excellent opportunity for a human resource professional to make an impact. The position reports to the Sr. HR Manager and will be based in our Irvine, CA office.

Primary Job Duties & Responsibilities:

As a Generalist you will be responsible for delivering core HR services, including; strategic business planning and partnering, staffing, employee relations, coaching and organizational development.


  • Partner with the business to identify, develop and drive key initiatives such as leadership development, talent/performance management, change management, workforce planning, talent acquisition, employee and career development, performance management, rewards and recognition, and coaching (employee and manager)

  • Work with managers and employees to address all types of employee relations issues, fairly representing all interests

  • Build and nurture strong relationships with key stakeholders, customers and colleagues inside and outside of HR to innovate, enhance, align and drive the effectiveness of HR initiatives

  • Recommend, amend and drive improvement to human resources systems, policies and processes by continuing to stay abreast of the marketplace to identify and leverage best practices / trends to influence the business and HR agenda

  • Possess personal and professional credibility to serve as a coach and advisor to employees and members of management

  • Identify and help solve employee performance issues

  • Drive employee engagement programs and initiatives

  • Partner with the Training and Development team to identify and facilitate the growth and development of Atkinson’s internal talent

Workforce Planning & Staffing

  • Provide candid and constructive feedback to business leaders about talent moves, gaps, promotions and growth opportunities

  • Partner with the business to understand and make recommendations on current and future staffing needs

  • Partner with the Talent Acquisition team to drive fulfillment of needs

Skills Desired/Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree and 6+ years of HR experience. HR Certification is a plus

  • Prior experience including organizational development, HR administration and business support required

  • Working knowledge of CA and WA state laws and regulations

  • Experience working with union and non-union employee populations

  • Knowledge of professional best practices and industry trends as they apply to all HR related functions and responsibilities required.

  • Preferred experience in the construction industry

  • Strong analytical, problem solving and decision-making skills

  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite as well as the Google Suite of products

  • Strong mathematical aptitude and analysis skills for researching, analyzing, developing, and leading in the implementation of Human Resources related programs and recommendations

  • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills in dealing proactively with all levels of internal and external management, vendor, or agency personnel, including a high degree of sensitivity and change management abilities to intercultural personnel and corporate dynamics
