Senior R&D Ultrasound Engineer- Electrophysiology Irvine, CA

As Senior R&D Ultrasound Engineer, you will be part of our Electrophysiology catheter product development team focused on delivering the future in diagnostic, imaging, and ablation therapy catheters. This role will involve a range of responsibilities including but not limited to design concept development and maturation, requirement development, testing and data analysis, and test method development and validation. You will be expected to lead and contribute to innovation and product development projects for ultrasound imaging (systems and catheter) from design concepts, product development and pre-clinical assessments to product launch.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead systems-level product development, owning design specifications and verifications that complies with related medical device regulations/standards (FDA, IEC, etc.) and internal quality management and design control processes.

  • Establish components and product requirements and specifications.

  • Apply advanced engineering and scientific principles to the evaluation and solution of technical problems.

  • Perform the layout, construction, and evaluation of a variety of prototype printed circuit boards, fixtures, and tools required for development purposes.

  • Perform troubleshooting, fault isolation, and failure analysis activities on a variety of electronic systems including breadboards and hybrids.

  • Conduct measurements specified in design verification plans, documents and tabulates results, and provide engineering test reports.

  • Drive innovation and continual improvement of imaging performance from concept to prototyping and product release.

  • Maintain positive and cooperative communications and collaboration with all levels of employees, customers, contractors, and vendors.

  • Work closely with product development team to establish product development goals while ensuring market compatibility

  • Plan, schedule and coordinate project tasks and activities.

  • Support bench / animal testing and clinical evaluations.

  • Identify and mitigate project risks

Required Experience and Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, physics, biomedical engineering, or a related technical field (Master's degree strongly preferred)

  • 6+ years of engineering work experience in medical imaging, specifically in ultrasound imaging and image optimization in areas such as intravascular and or intracardiac ultrasound imaging (PhD degree may substitute for experience).

  • Experience with a variety of manufacturing processes and designing for manufacturability.

  • Experience working in a broader enterprise/cross-division business units model

  • Familiarity with IEC 60601-1 "Medical Electrical Equipment - General requirements for basic safety and essential performance"

  • Strong individual contributor and team player

  • Familiarity with the design, testing and debugging of analog and digital circuitry as they relate to biomedical RF ablation, ultrasound diagnostic and therapeutic systems.

  • Demonstrated ability to develop new design features as part of existing systems.

  • Documented record of delivering engineering information which adds value to management's decision making process.

  • Demonstrated ability to understand and comply with applicable FDA regulations and Company operating procedures, processes, policies and tasks.

  • Advanced personal computer skills, including spreadsheet, word processing, database management, and specialized applications (e.g. MatLab).

  • Familiarity with the operation and use of standard and advanced test equipment including, oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, network/impedance analyzers, power supplies, amplifiers, function generators, pulse generators and a variety of ultrasound characterization equipment.

  • Ability to work within a team and as an individual contributor in a fast-paced, changing environment.

  • Ability to leverage and/or engage others to accomplish projects.

  • Ability to work in a highly matrixed and geographically diverse business environment.

  • Ability to multitasks, prioritizes and meets deadlines in timely manner.

  • Strong organizational skills, as well as attention to detail.

  • Ability to travel approximately 10%, including internationally.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A Ph.D. degree

  • Ultrasound product experience (disposable and or system level)

  • Computer-based signal processing

  • Medical Device experience

  • Imaging and cardiac stimulation device experience
