The Manager, Patent Counsel, will be a trusted business partner and
guardian of Edwards' assets and reputation while advancing
solutions for the benefit of all stakeholders.
Work Schedule: This position is in Irvine, CA and will require
minimum 3 days onsite per week.
Key Responsibilities:
---Strategically manage and develop a global patent portfolio
protecting key Edwards innovation
---Collaborate with R&D, marketing, and other business
functions to identify new inventions and opportunities to create
additional IP
---Review and evaluate invention disclosures for patentability
---Conduct regular Invention Committee Review meetings to evaluate,
with senior R&D personnel, invention disclosures and determine
which inventions should be captured in patent filings
---Develop a strategy for expanding patent coverage for key
innovation
---Prepare and prosecute patent applications, direct outside
counsel in the prosecution of applications outside the United
States
---Evaluate freedom to operate for projects in development
---Identify and evaluate potential infringement concerns
---Advise and educate internal clients regarding IP-related issues,
including new developments in patent and trade secret laws and
policies
---Other incidental duties
Basic Qualifications:
---Juris Doctor or equivalent
---Minimum 4 years of experience drafting and prosecuting patent
applications and evaluating freedom to operate
---Admitted to the bar of at least one state
---Admitted to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark
Office
---Experience at a top law firm and/or in-house legal
department
Preferred Qualifications:
---Experience in life sciences industry
---Proven expertise in Microsoft Office Suite and related systems
and/or tools
---Proven successful project management skills
---Excellent documentation and communication skills and
interpersonal relationship skills including negotiating and
relationship management skills with ability to drive achievement of
objectives
---Strict attention to detail
---Ability to interact professionally with all organizational
levels and proactively escalate issues to appropriate levels of
management in the organization
---Ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced
environment
---Work is generally self-guided with input from stakeholders with
adherence to established patterns and practices
---Exercises considerable latitude in determining objectives and
approaches to assignment in own team
---Ability to represent leadership on sections of projects within a
specific area interfacing with project managers and team
---Ability to consult in project setting within specific sections
of area
---Develops solutions to complex problems which require the regular
use of ingenuity and innovation; ensures solutions are consistent
with organization objectives
---Exercises judgment in selecting methods, techniques, and
evaluation criteria for obtaining results
Aligning our overall business objectives with performance, we offer
competitive salaries, performance-based incentives, and a wide

For California, the base pay range for this position is $128,000 to
$181,000(highly experienced).
The pay for the successful candidate will depend on various factors
(e.g., qualifications, education, prior experience).
