The Patent Counsel sits on the Legal Team at Edwards Lifesciences partnering with the Transcatheter Heart Valve (THV) business unit. The Patent Counsel will be a trusted business partner serving as a guardian of Edwards' assets and reputation while advancing solutions for the benefit of all stakeholders. Key Responsibilities: Invention disclosure research, patent application drafting, patent prosecution , patent landscape research and analysis, and subject matter specific projects Work with the THV business unit and the IP team to formulate IP filing and enforcement strategy Manage and oversee outside counsel in the drafting, filing and prosecution of patent applicationsWork collaboratively with inside counsel on trademark strategy Responsible for le gal research, review and interpretation of legislation Review contracts, draft and negotiate a wide range of intellectual property agreements Responsible for an assigned set of projects and/or small client group Provide feedback and guidance to staff on assignments and assigned areas Provide legal guidance to other attorneys in department Other incidental duties Basic Qualifications: Juris Doctor and California State Bar membership with minimum 4 years of experience in a reputable law firm or in-house legal department is required Bachelor's degree in engineering, materials science, physics or similar technologies required Ability to effectively manage outside legal counsel Understand the innovation and product development process as it relates to business and technical needs Excellent analytical, detail-oriented, organized and information seeking skills Excellent written and verbal communication skills and interpersonal relationship skills including negotiating and relationship management skills with ability to drive achievement of objectives Ability to interact professionally with all organizational levels and proactively escalate issues to appropriate levels of management in the organization Ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment Ability to lead on projects within multiple areas, interfacing with project managers, legal team and middle management Preferred Qualifications: Experience in medical device, pharmaceuticals, or other highly regulated industry is preferred Registered to practice in the US Patent and Trademark Office is highly preferred E dwards is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action employer including protected Veterans and individuals with disabilities.
