Position description
The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of
California, Irvine is accepting applications for a position in the
Specialist Series at the Associate, and full Specialists level.
The position will be split between the Cardio-Obstetric Program and
the Black PEARL (Promoting Equity Anti-Racism and Love) Program.
The Cardio-Obstetric Program (PI: Afshan Hameed, MD, FACC, FACOG)
partners with healthcare networks, researchers, and clinicians to
implement and evaluate cardiovascular risk assessment measures and
programs to improve cardiovascular health during pregnancy and
postpartum. The Black PEARL Model (PI: Candice Lucas, MD & Carol
Major, MD) aims to integrate care systems in partnership with a
BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) community-based
doula workforce in Orange County, recruited and trained with
HERStory, Inc., and establish systemic integrated care with UCI
Health, the only academic health center in Orange County. The
programs are funded by private and federal grants.
The position will work directly with the principal investigators
and other members of the team to design and conduct research on the
association of risk assessment with maternal infant health outcomes
and cardiovascular risk behaviors, and the impact of the Black
PEARL program on maternal and infant birth outcomes.
Responsibilities will include conducting research, supervising
research staff, overseeing data collection and management,
presenting at scientific conferences, and publishing papers in the
peer-reviewed literature. Study design, preparation of proposals,
and career development activities are also important aspects of the
position.
We strongly encourage individuals from groups historically excluded
from research and medicine to apply. The position, designed for
candidates with professional experience and early career PhD
researchers, will offer unique opportunities to gain the experience
and skills to become independent research scholars, including
conducting pilot projects and developing partnerships. The position
will be a key member of the cardio-obstetric team and will
collaborate with the submission of quality measures to the Centers
for Medicaid and Medicare Services (CMS) and Partnership for
Quality Measurement (PQM), advocate for clinical guideline
development with national professional organizations; conduct data
analyses of UCI's cardio obstetric database; conduct studies,
including community-engaged research, on patient CVD risk behaviors
and social determinants of health. The position will develop
grant-writing and manuscript preparation skills, and present at
seminars and scientific conferences.
The ideal candidate will have experience in the following areas:
cardiovascular health, management and data extraction of electronic
health record databases, obstetric-primary care coordination,
community-based participatory research and/or health behavior
research, a strong background in study design and program
management, and familiarity with the CMS and PQM quality measure
development and review process.
