Student Affairs Irvine, CA, USA Full-Time Email Me Similar Jobs Email Me This Job Office Profile: The Center for Career and Vocation assists students to determine and fulfill their career goals through programs and services that foster, in each student, career management confidence via self-assessment, research, skill development, and exposure to opportunity. Role: The Director of Career and Vocation partners with Academic Advising and the Associate Dean of Student Development in facilitating continuous improvement to ensure the Career Center remains responsive and relevant to students' career development needs within the context of institutional priorities and of an evolving labor market. This position collaborates with a variety of internal and external stakeholders, develops the vision and implements comprehensive professional development initiatives throughout the students' college years. This individual provides thought leadership, strategic planning and connects the activities and outcomes of the department to institutional priorities, goals, and mission. This position's emphasis is in Self-Assessment, Understanding of Vocation, Professional Development, Training and Marketing, and State of the Art Technology Applications. The position requires an energetic and effective communicator who can engage and connect with stakeholders and cultivate collaborative relationships both on and off campus, to build momentum and foster buy-in for strategic initiatives. Service delivery is to be consistent with Christian values and the fulfillment of the Mission of Concordia University Irvine. STAFF AND SUPERVISORY RELATIONSHIPS: Report to the Associate Dean of Student Development for general supervision Work closely with Academic Advising, Alumni Relations, and Human Resources Supervises Student Workers ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING: Career Coaching, Advising, and Counseling (30%) Collaborate with students in identifying needs, personal characteristics, and life experiences related to vocation and career development. Develop action plans in support of student employability skills and based on a theoretical model of career development. Present career issues including career planning and employability skills. Administer, interpret, report, and record finding from assessment instruments such as personality, career thoughts, Strengths Finder, decision making, interest, values, or aptitudes/skills. Research, select and receive training in using new assessments in career coaching based on student qualities and goals. Base coaching on goal-oriented (realization of career goals) and holistic (whole person) models in a relational and informational manner. Lead in the delivery of career coaching including group-based, individual based, workshop, and instructional applications. Brokering, Connecting, and Linking (20%) Maintain and communicate a knowledge base of occupational, career, and job information resources and technologies as well as an understanding of the labor market employment trends, and recruiting strategies and techniques. Be aware of economic, political, and global issues that affect higher education and major employment trends. Source, develop, adapt, design and use resources to consult with students on job-search tools and strategies, including resume writing, developing cover letters and job-campaign correspondence, interviewing, networking, and making connections with employers. Serve as a liaison to academic and co-curricular departments and organizations on career readiness trends and resources. Collaborate with the Director of Alumni and Family Relations to assist parents and families in understanding and supporting their students with the challenges students face in the career development and job-search processes. Manage, source, and develop experiential education opportunities that meet the needs of the student population. Participate in cross-departmental service delivery to constituencies such as Orientation, WINGS, first generation, undeclared students. Teaching, Training, and Educating (15%) Design, administer, and compile results of needs assessments and benchmarking for teaching, training, and educating initiatives. Articulate learning objectives and design programs and workshops based on development theories and current research. Keep up-to-date of current professional research, and use relevant results in the performance of job duties. Understand the basics of student development theory, learning styles, and strategies of instruction. Provide information regarding the importance of career mentoring and networking. Develop, plan and conduct orientation, seminars, workshops and classroom presentations on topics such as career and job search strategies, resume writing, interviewing techniques, salary negotiations, setting up LinkedIn profiles, social media brand management. Program and Event Administration (10%) Assess student learning outcomes for programs and events, and implement changes based on assessments. Develop creative and innovative programming to meet the needs of the students, faculty, and/or other stakeholders. Develop, evaluate, and adjust budgets to maximize use of and track the fiscal resources of programs and events. Manage and assume accountability for timelines for programs and events, ensuring that all aspects are covered and results are accomplished in a timely fashion. Develop appropriate alliances with others to deliver programming and produce events efficiently and effectively. Research, Assessment, and Evaluation (10%) Articulate the impact of programs and services for promoting student learning and development to campus stakeholders. Develop specific strategies to assess programs and services for desired outcomes. Conduct a multi-year trend analysis, identify utilization patterns, develop strategies to reach underserved student population segments, and report that information to stakeholders. Apply specific findings and recommendations from research-based readings to develop strategies for career services improvement initiatives. Create a typical career services operational plan, including goals, objectives, strategies, and success metrics. Demonstrate comprehensive understanding and effective use of assessment results and benchmarks in determining that career services are meeting its mission and in setting future direction. Information Management (10%) Evaluate and disseminate incoming information and resources. Work with vendors and campus contacts to implement and maintain systems. Create or update web or virtual engagement forums (i.e. Handshake, Career Center webpage) Marketing, Promoting, Performing Outreach (5%) Design and implement marketing campaigns in support of programming. Research topic and audiences, draft content, and deliver customized presentations to diverse constituencies. Understand social media marketing trends and video content creation. APPOINTMENT: Appointed by the Associate Vice President and Dean of Students Approved by the Associate Dean of Student Development LEADERSHIP: Maintain a working philosophy consistent with Christian values Assist Concordia in translating Christian principles into day-by-day practice and procedure Be a person of integrity and honor Possess the skill and desire to provide spiritual counsel to students and colleagues Be able to work independently with minimal supervision Be a person of high energy Be able to organize existing resources to strengthen the quality of Concordia Communicate with others with warmth and understanding Maintain an open outlook, be future-oriented and innovative Manifest loyalty to other personnel Work as a team member Respect lines of communication Constantly strive to improve performance Formulate goals and objectives and expect to be evaluated upon them Able to understand and work with underrepresented students and their families to ensure academic success EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: The successful candidate will have a minimum of three years of professional experience working in student affairs, career development, or student development within a higher education community setting, with the majority of years of experience in a leadership role preferred; Master's degree in College Student Affairs, Administration, Counseling, or related field; Experience working in a Christian liberal arts institution is desirable. LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, analyze and interpret university procedures, general information, financial or educational publications, synodical procedures or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of staff, faculty, administration, students, families and the general public. MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs. REASONING ABILITY: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
