Position Summary:The Division of Finance and Administration (DFA)
provides services and support to over 50,000 students, faculty, and

The result is a safe and healthy environment with appropriate
compliance, protection of assets and efficient execution of
business processes. Applies thorough and professional safety
knowledge and expertise supporting Research Safety programmatic
areas within EH&S. Works with the academic researchers and labs
to implement safety practices and procedures within the lab and in
the field, identifying and evaluating a wide variety of potential
hazards in the workplace. Serves as lead to the Controlled
Substances program with oversight of the program functions.
Performs regular audits and inspections focusing on U.S. Department
of Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) requirements communicating
findings with UCI's Office of Research, as necessary. Provides
regulatory interpretation and technical advice. Works
collaboratively with academic units, campus support units, and EHS,
addressing any issues that affect campus licenses. Work is reviewed
upon completion to ensure predetermined objectives are adequately
met and that application of professional / technical judgment is
sound. Demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and
techniques for obtaining solutions. Performs lab safety inspections
and provides EHS research safety services and additional program
support, including, but not limited to, field safety, dive and boat
safety, occupational health, employee drug and alcohol testing,
safety training compliance, chemical inventory support, and
research-related PPE. Position is under general supervision by the
Research Safety Programs Manager. Decision-making is based on
established procedures; relevant laws; regulations and
organizational policy; professional best practices; relevant
science methodology; impact on other EH&S programs, and senior
management approvals as required. Decisions may impact individual
work, other EH&S programs, other departments and / or segments
of the organization.

(Annual Salary) Expected Pay Range within the Full Salary Range
$73,900.00 - $133,700.00 (Annual Salary)
Required: Three or more years safety specialist work, including 1
or more years with lab safety experience required.Bachelor's degree
in biology, chemistry, industrial hygiene, environmental science,
or a related area and / or equivalent experience / training
required Thorough knowledge / understanding of specific EH&S
field(s) including related laws and regulations; and general
knowledge / understanding of all EH&S fields, specifically in a
research laboratory setting. Thorough knowledge and skill in
applying and interpreting applicable local, state, and federal
regulations and related standards and guidelines. Thorough written,
verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, including political
acumen and skill to communicate effectively in a diverse
environment Strong analytical and organizational skills to
organize, prioritize and manage the successful completion of
projects within time and budget constraints. Strong skill to
appropriately use technology and relevant scientific equipment as
required. Strong ability to evaluate and initiate programmatic
changes through priority-setting skills, collaboration, and
communication. Strong ability to design, develop, and present
safety programs to individuals and groups. Strong demonstrated
project management skills. Thorough knowledge of federal codes
applying to controlled substances, Title 21 CFR, Part 1300 and US
Department of Transportation Ability to maintain confidential data
and records. Ability to develop a strong rapport with academic
personnel to thoroughly evaluate research projects and develop
creative solutions to unique and often complex problems.
Preferred: Professional certification preferred.
Special Conditions Required: * Must be able to wear PPE * Must have
a valid CA Driver's License and participate in the DMV pull-notice
program * May be required to work outside of regularly scheduled
work shift.
